The ECCO-FARM Project, in collaboration with the NGO “Healthy Livestock, Risk-Free Life,” successfully organized the second round of training entitled “Improving Livestock Health in Target Soums through a Integrated Approach of Herders and Veterinarians” from May 18–22, 2026.
Participants included relevant specialists from the Veterinary Laboratory of the Veterinary Department of Sukhbaatar aimag, along with a total of 13 veterinarians from Bayandelger, Uulbayan, and Baruun-Urt soums. In Dornod aimag, relevant specialists from the Veterinary Laboratory of the Veterinary Department also participated together with 12 veterinarians from Gurvanzagal, Matad, and Kherlen soums.
On the first day of the training, participants reviewed and reinforced the content from the initial training session through classroom-based learning and practical laboratory exercises.
On the second day, veterinarians worked directly with herder households. A total of 23 herders from the two aimags participated in questionnaire surveys and received information and advisory services.
The veterinary service training for herders covered the following topics:
Review commonly used medicines and supplements and promote the proper use of veterinary drugs
Conduct surveys and examinations on ecroparasites that negatively affect meat, wool, and cashmere production, and introduce appropriate ecroparasites control measures
Give advice to help herders understand the importance of assessing the effectiveness of deworming treatments by detecting helminth eggs in 1 gram of fecal samples (EPG) before and after deworming, and demonstrate findings to herders using microscopes
The importance of deworming livestock and evaluating the effectiveness of deworming products
Guidance on good biosecurity practices for herders and farmers
The training program aimed at preparing local veterinarians as trainers for herders is a strategically important initiative focused on improving livestock health, ensuring food safety, and enhancing herders’ livelihoods.
