Why is 2026 a milestone year for Mongolia in the climate space?

In February 2025, the Government of Mongolia and United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) signed an agreement to hold the UNCCD COP17 in Ulaanbaatar. Mongolia is now preparing to host the UNCCD COP17 in August 2026. In addition to this flagship event, at the request of Mongolia, the UN declared 2026 the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP).
